Birdy Hi all,
I've been looking around the site for a while but only just found this great forum!
I'm a 24 year old Melbournian and I'm marrying my 35 yo fiance March 16th.
I'm stuck on finding Bridesmaids dresses, my mum has recently offered to pay for them to be custom made because I have girls coming from Tasmania and Germany. The 3rd is my best friend and Maid of Honour and is here in Melb. I was told because my girls arn't all the same size it may be a good idea to vary the dresses slightly to cater for each body type but have them all in the same colour. Has anyone here done it (or is doing it?) for their wedding? And were do I go for fabrics and patterns? Also any advice on dress styles to flatter an hourglass or pear shape would be very much appreciated.!

EmmyLou What I was doing (we have postponed the wedding for another year for financial reasons) is buying the fabric for the dresses & then having the girls get made whatever they wanted.

They're still the same colour so they will still look alike etc.

My MOH (best friend) and BM (sister) are so different in size in shape we would never have found something that suited them both. Even if we had, it still would've looked 'different'.

Anything a-line looks good on pear/hourglass shapes.

I say talk to your BM's, they would know what style looks best on them.

And you can get fabric from places like Spotlight & Lincraft etc.

Good luck!!

Jill Hi Birdy,

How about visiting some bridal expos around Melbourne? one of the free magazines show the types of dresses that flatter different body styles.

I bought my girls' dresses 9 months in advance and have the final fitting 2 weeks before the wedding. I find that more economical. some people think custom made is better, but my bridesmaids all live in different zones, one up south, the other two west from each other.

Most shops would require an order 4-6 weeks in advance, depending on what season, like I got married in December, is near Xmas, most delivery closes earlier. My girls were growing so I decided to buy a bigger size so the alteration lady can sew it smaller. It turn out great. they only turn up at the final fitting.

best of luck.
cheers,jill

Charmore A line dresses always look great.

Ask your bridesmaids what they like and what looks good on them, and see if they could find a pic of a dress they would like to wear then work from there.

Or you could always get dresses custom made from ebay very cheap

Louisa Hi birdy

I just got married and had 3 bridesmaids of different sizes and shapes.

I chose a two piece outfit as two pieces is more flattering on a combo of shapes than a 1 piece.

We had the dresses custom made for the girls so that the dresses fit each of them perfectly.

I also didn't go for a style that was slinky or tight fitting etc as that doesn't suit diff body types.

So you can put different girls in the same dress if you choose a sensible style.

I suggest visiting house of bride dot com as they have thousands of different dress styles.
